Are They Whining or Am I Just Getting Old?

Whining_buttonApparently, I have set-off a firestorm over at employeeevolution.com, a blog "dedicated to helping the millennial generation answer the hard-hitting
questions that come with the biggest transition of [our] lives."

I posted a piece on how Gen Xers and the Millenials (read college kids) need to figure out how to market themselves if they want to succeed. Boy, did the gloves come off–and fast. It is now listed among the most popular posts. Several have gotten it–but many have called it "harsh," "over the top," and "full of jargon."

A sampling:

"It should be more about doing cool stuff everyday and getting things done than about “branding” and yelling at people to do it ."

"Trying to blast off into super-stardom never works."

"Wow! That’s a stress-inducing point of view. Unless you are an
extremely driven individual, I think the advice in this post is way
over-the-top."

"
Remind me to not apply for a job where Lyn is the hiring manager."

"This article has a panic-attack inducing tone that can only add to the
pressure students feel to have their entire life figured out and the
perfect job immediately after graduation."

This conversation reminds me of when my children were very young and I told them that coats were not optional in sub-zero weather. It is discouraging that so many Millenials would rather shoot the messenger than figure out how the world works.

One of my mentors, Jill Konrath’s daughter, has two blogs completely devoted to this topic:

    getFreshMinds: http://www.getfreshminds.com/

    Does Your Major Matter: http://www.doesyourmajormatter.com/

And, she conducted a survey about this very topic.

I personally cannot stand this new generation of whiners - of which my nephews is one!

I can tell you as a business owner with an intern program that I’m less impressed with all the do-hickeys on someone’s resume and am more impressed with good written and oral communication skills and a keen ability to see and react responsibly to the big picture.

As an aside, Katie is doing a GREAT job of positioning herself!
